DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL - SEPT 27th/28th/29th

did you ever wonder what lies behind the screen at  spring? Come and visit during the DUMBO Arts Festival this weekend and see our new set up. We have new stoneware platters by Michele Quan and Steve has an open studio in the back.

Friday 27th: 
we'll see how things are going, but you're always welcome, 12 - 7pm
Saturday 28th: 12 - 9pm

with an opening event 6-9pm, including a couple of readings at Berl's in the front

Sunday 29th: 12 - 6pm

spring welcomes Berl's Poetry Shop

in their own words:

Berl’s Poetry Shop is a poetry-focused bookstore co-founded by poets Jared White and Farrah Field. We sell independent and small press books as well as handmade chapbooks and art books. For two and a half years we sold poetry at the Brooklyn Flea and have now found a home with spring in DUMBO. Berl’s hosts poetry readings, art and literary events, book launches, and art exhibitions. Jared has published three chapbooks: Yellowcake (Cannibal Books), This Is What It Is Like To Be Loved By Me (Bloof Books), and My Former Politics (H_ngm_n Books). With Four Way Books, Farrah has published two books of poetry, Rising and Wolf and Pilot, and she has also published a chapbook Parents (Immaculate Disciples Press). Jared and Farrah live in Dumbo with their son.

SECRET BEHAVIOR  - launch and exhibition

Berl's is opening on September 18th (6-9pm) with the launch of Secret Behavior (issue 1) - a visually stunning biannual magazine focussing on human beings and contemporary art. 

If you are in DUMBO and come by spring, you will notice that something is different. After 10 years(!) of curating shows and working with amazing talent, we are taking a break and are refocusing our attention. We have made the front space available to Berl's Brooklyn Poetry Shop while we have our new backspace  -  both an office and studio, we will continue to host a series of events. 
We can still be reached at 718 222 1054, or ring the bell and ask for us. Keep checking here  or like us on Facebook for updates and invitations to our upcoming events like gusto!

This Thursday the 25th at spring

Experience an evening of Italian wine and foods - enjoy a tasting and discover how taste is effected when pairing. 

If you have been curious to know more about wine and what sommeliers and wine connoisseurs look for in a wine, then this is an appointment not to be missed.

Two - not one! - certified sommeliers from Italy's A.I.S.* (Associazione Italiana Sommelier) will take us through this experience. 

This is the first of what we plan to be a series of events that explore taste and where we will learn the principles (and pleasures!) of wine and food. The setting is friendly and the learning is professional. The point is to understand and enjoy what we drink and eat. And while you are at it, learn a few Italian words!

Tasting includes the following wines:
Franciacorta Le Marchesine Satén - Lombardia
Vitiano Bianco Falesco - Lazio/Umbria
Valpolicella Accordini - Veneto

ASIA SOCIETY of ARTS - OTHER WORLDS 11.10.12 - 11.18.12

Asian Society of Arts (ASA) has invited Bonnie Sue Stein and Karen Hatch of GOH Productions to curate OTHER WORLDS, a show of photography and motion graphic designers and animators. Nine artists have been selected from the membership of ASA for the varying points of view displayed in their work. Photography in the show ranges from stark black and white surreal landscapes to family portraits; and the animation from fantasy to social commentary. The worlds portrayed are sometimes familiar or commonplace, and sometimes fantastic, but always compelling for what the artists portray through their keen observation.

Giacomo Manzoni and Giacomo Cavalleri present an exhibition of the work of great Italian designer Pio Manzù with selected pieces produced by Alessi, Alias, Flos, Kartell and Manzoni Design.

based on a 1965 design by Pio Manzù, the briefcases were initially designed as a promotional material for Fiat sales reps, today re-thought by Giacomo Manzoni. Made from a single mold with a 95% polystyrene/plastic and comes in the black, white and red.

Selected photographers will be included in a 2-week exhibition at spring which coincides with the prestigious DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL, September 28th/ 29th/ 30th 2012 The festival attracts 200,000 visitors over three days of special exhibitions, performances and open studios.

Peer pressure is the hardest thing about being a teenager, Some people might say that I’m the peer pressure one… when I was younger I was like, “Come on let’s do this, let’s go do this.” Now that I’ve gotten older everybody’s into more drugs and everything. And they’re like, “Come on,” and I’m like, why did I do that when I was younger, make people do something they didn’t want to do?

Like with Ecstasy, I didn’t want to do it at first ‘cause I heard it could kill you and everything, but my friend she did ‘em and she was like, “Come on, ya got to do ‘em.” So I did. I’ve snorted heroin (that made me feel really bad), snorted Ritalin, done coke for like three months nonstop. And then I realized I needed to stop–I made myself stop. There’s one drug I will do again and that’s acid. I love that drug.

I’d say my fantasy future life is like everybody else’s. Have a big house, lots of cars, be able to just stop everything I’m doing and take a cruise for like a whole year, around the world or something. 

In reality, in the future I’ll probably have a steady job, probably have my own apartment but things will probably be very, very ghetto. Like, how we describe ghetto here is Oodles of Noodles. You have Oodles of Noodles and Kool Aid. That’s it, that’s about all. This is just how it sets in around here. If you stay here, you know for a fact, coming from where I grew up you will have a ghetto apartment..

The biggest thing that changed my life was when I dropped out of school in tenth grade… If I was in school it would be so much easier to get into college and get the grants and the scholarships; so much easier than now.
